Aider
Open-source AI pair programming tool
- Coding & development · editorial fit

Overview
Aider is an open-source AI pair-programming tool that runs in a terminal and works with a new or existing codebase. It maps the repository for context, lets a developer request edits conversationally, and records changes through Git so the result can be diffed, undone, and reviewed with familiar tools.
Aider connects to cloud or local language models and can be used from an editor as well as the terminal. Images and web pages can supply context, voice input can request changes, and automatic linting and tests give the pair-programming loop a concrete verification step.
Supported use cases
Terminal pair programming
Implement a feature or fix in an existing repository while retaining Git history for review.
Local-model workflows
Use a local model for code changes when source or model execution must remain under the developer's control.
Test-driven maintenance
Ask for a change, run the project checks, and let Aider address problems found by linters or tests.
Key capabilities
Repository mapping
Builds a map of the codebase to help the model reason about larger projects.
Git-native editing
Applies edits and automatically commits them with useful messages so developers can diff, undo, and manage changes.
Broad model and language support
Connects to many hosted or local LLMs and supports more than 100 programming languages.
Test and multimodal context
Accepts images or web pages, supports voice-to-code, and can run linters and tests after edits.
