A careful path from brief to publish-ready short
An ordered, tool-neutral checklist for producing and checking one short video.
Use this tool-neutral checklist to take one short video from brief to a checked export. It combines common production decisions with workflows described in vendor documentation; the linked tools were not hands-on tested for this guide.
1. Define the deliverable
Write one sentence describing the intended viewer and what they should understand or do. Then set the destination, aspect ratio, approximate duration, and any export requirements. Keep one main idea per video and choose an audience and channel that suit the message.
2. Gather sources and draft
Collect primary references for factual claims, especially prices, dates, product limits, and instructions that can change. Draft a short opening, a few supporting points, and a clear closing. Mark estimates as estimates and remove unsupported numbers or promises. Read the script aloud and edit it for natural speech.
3. Choose the editing route
Match the tool to the material you have: transcript-led editing can suit recorded presenter footage; script-to-video assembly can suit a written script and scene sequence; an audio/video timeline can suit narration-led projects. Review the individual Descript, Pictory, and ElevenLabs profiles for vendor-described functions and current plan constraints. A feature match is not a product recommendation or a guarantee of output quality.
4. Assemble with rights in mind
Use original or permissioned footage, images, music, narration, and written material. Note where each asset came from and any restrictions on commercial, client, or standalone use. Get clear consent before generating a person’s voice or likeness. Do not assume a stock subscription allows an asset to be reused outside the final video.
5. Edit and review the whole video
Check that each scene supports the narration and that cuts preserve meaning. Verify names, pronunciation, facts, and captions against the source and audio. Keep captions readable, correctly timed, and clear of platform interface areas. Listen for abrupt audio changes and check that the ending contains the intended next step.
6. Verify the export
Confirm aspect ratio, resolution, duration, watermark, file format, plan allowance, and any music attribution or clearance requirement. Export a private draft and inspect it on the intended device. Fix issues before publication. For example, Pictory’s current guidance calls for a single-use code in the YouTube description when a video uploaded from 1 September 2026 onward contains Melodie music; see its clearance instructions.
7. Publish only after the checks
Recheck the destination’s current upload requirements and your rights to all included assets. Publish only when the content, captions, export, and permissions are ready. These checks help catch issues before you decide whether to publish.
